My dress swished in the breeze matching the rhythm of the swaying wheat surrounding me. I gazed up above at the star studded sky. They glinted like gems, revealing the majesty of the heavens. They stole my breath, but not my gaze. That was dominated by the full golden moon and a promise that was made long ago.
I could hear his voice on the wind, whispering softly in my ear.
Dance with me beneath a golden moon
Gilded light streaming through us
Illuminating the love we encompass
Dance with me beneath a golden moon
When two become one
A stolen moment of love
Creating life that will never lie
My hands drifted over my heart as I recited our vow. The golden moon was here, but where was he?
I saw a glow drifting towards me over the swaying wheat and my heart stopped. As it grew closer the form of a man was revealed.
“What do you wait for?” He asked me.
“You promised you’d come. Where did you go?”
“You know where I am.” I could hear the soft smile in his voice. But it made me want to cry.
“We made a promise. A vow.” Tears slipped through my angry words.
“And I don’t intend to break it. It just might not happen the way you had hoped.”
I stamped my foot in anger and resisted a scream. “But why can’t it? Why did you have to leave me? I never got to say goodbye!” My voice cracked and I was sobbing in earnest now.
I felt a warmth surround me like a hug, trying to bring me comfort. “What is a goodbye now to the future we will soon share? My promise still stands my love. But don’t forget another promise that was once made.”
My body shook with sobs and I shook my head, refusing to hear his words.
“This is just one ending my love. But something else has begun. Remember our promise, but don’t forget to live. There is so much waiting for you. Live. And one day we will dance beneath a golden moon.”
He left me with a kiss, finally giving me my goodbye.
I never forgot him, every night gazing up at the sky, seeing his face in the moon. But I did live. I lived the way I knew he wanted me too.
And then one day soon I was in his arms dancing beneath a golden moon.
