“You can’t hurt me.” I thought they were going to be my last words. But something in my countenance stopped him.
“Why do you say that?” He seemed genuinely curious. That was a first. So I told him the truth.
“Because God is with me. He is bigger than you, more powerful. He will save me.”
Ezra tilted his head back and laughed. “It’s always the same with you people. Hoping in an invisible god that will leave you high and dry. He didn’t save them and he wont save you.” He sneered menacingly at me and I leaned away slightly.
“That depends on what you think it means to be saved.”
Ezra let out another barking laugh. “Enlighten me child. What does it mean to be saved?”
I took a confident step forward and looked him straight in the eye. Ezra stumbled back a little, clearly shocked at my audacity. “Being saved means that no matter what you do to me in this life, I have a place in paradise. I will live in eternal bliss while you will live in eternal suffering.”
He sneered at me again, but this time I could see the uncertainty in his eyes. No one had ever confronted him like this before and I could see how hard he was trying to conceal his fear. Finally his eyes narrowed in anger. Actually it was more than anger. His eyes were filled with malice and hate.
The next few moments were a blur. I don’t remember much of what happened, but I do know this. God did save me that day. And now I get to live with him forever, and will never endure suffering again.
