The leaves turned into a red-gold blur around me as I ran. I leapt over logs and skirted bushes as I kept up with the Man racing beside me. I turned my head to look at him through the trees. He gave me a smile and I couldn’t help but smile back, my joy overflowing. I turned my attention back to the path in front of me, glancing occasionally at the Man. Although sometimes he appeared in the form of a lion. And other times, a lamb.
I giggled and twirled, letting the breeze play in my hair as the race continued. It wasn’t a competition kind of race. We were just playing, encouraging each other to go farther, faster.
The wind picked up and spun the leaves around my head, almost as if they wanted to join in the game too. I broke into a clearing and stopped to catch my breath while the leaves settled on my head, adorning my hair like jewels. Thunder boomed above me and the sky darkened ominously. But I felt no fear. Not even when lightning sliced the sky, striking threateningly close. The thunder threatened rain, but none came. Another strike of lighting revealed the lion standing before me. My heart leapt at the sight.
The lion turned and began to run. He stopped suddenly and turned his head to look at me. I knew what he was doing. He was taunting me playfully, urging me to follow. And I obliged him. Lightning lit up the sky around me as I chased the great lion. Thunder cracked one last time and the sky began to brighten once again.
And then all of a sudden we broke through the trees and came to a stop in a green field being illuminated by the sun. The light streaming from above made the green grass glisten and the colorful flowers scattered about shine like gems.
A gentle breeze ruffled the ornate field and made my dress swish around my knees. I let the breeze have its fun as I watched the lamb standing before me. His gentle eyes beckoned me forward. I couldn’t help begin to take slow steps toward him.
And as I walked I watched as the lamb transformed into the Man. And then I was running. Running faster and faster until I launched myself into his arms, laughing in sheer delight.
