The Legend of Terra and Tide

A long time ago, before humans roamed the earth even before the dinosaurs, there lived the dragons. The dragons were made up of three clans. There was the Air Clan who spent their days flying in the sky, hunting the birds and who made their home among the clouds. Then there was the Earth Clan who hunted the four legged mammals and spent their time exploring the mountains where they made their beds. And finally there was the Sea Clan who loved swimming in the waters, hunting large fish and sleeping the night away among the coral.

As long the dragons have lived the three clans have been at war. Someone always found one reason or another to attack one of the other clans. War is all the dragons know. Now at the time our story takes place the dragons were in an unprecedented period of peace. For the first and last time no clans were fighting. All the clans stayed in their own territory and ignored the others. No one could find a reason to start another fight.

While the dragons thought that war was the only way of life they realized they quite liked living at peace and wanted to keep it that way. So all the clans made a pact that it would be forbidden to interact with a dragon of another clan. Our story begins twenty years after the pact had been made.

Terra of the Earth Clan was taking a drink at the river when Tide, a Sea Clan dragon, had taken a wrong turn on his way home and came swimming up the channel from the sea into the river. Now Terra was already closer to the sea than she was allowed to go and when she saw the sparkling blue dragon come swimming towards her she grew so frightened she couldn’t move.

Tide on the other hand was worried that he had accidentally entered the Earth Clan territory but he couldn’t help that he found the tawny dragon fascinating. He raised his head out of the water and greeted her. Terra was surprised. She had been taught that all dragons from other clans were aggressive and hostile. But this dragon seemed more curious than mean. Terra’s own fascination began to take shape.

Over the next year Terra and Tide continued to meet in secret and learn more about each other and each other’s clans. It didn’t take long for a strong friendship to form. A friendship that soon turned into love.

Soon the two were sneaking away nearly four times a day to meet up with each other. They even started making plans to run away with each other. Then one day, Terra’s younger sister, Umber, grew suspicious of where she was alway running off to. So she followed her. And when Umber saw that her older sister was not only meeting with a member of the Sea Clan, but had fallen in love with him, she immediately flew off to tell their father.

It wasn’t long till Terra’s father, Taupe, came barreling through the brush with a loud roar. The two young dragons leapt to their feet. Terra placed herself in front of Tide and stood up to her father. He was furious. He swore that by the end of the night if Terra didn’t denounce her love for Tide they would both be dead. He gave her till sunset to decide.

What Taupe didn’t count on was how strong their love truly was. Terra and Tide decided that they would fly away together and make a home for themselves on the other side of the world. When Taupe came back to the river to get his answer, the two had gone. He searched for hours, even enlisted the help of the rest of the clan, but it seemed like they disappeared into thin air.

No one actually knows what happened to them. If they eventually made a home somewhere, or if they died on the way. But while they did end up ending the peace (the Sea Clan declared war once they found out one of their own had flown away with an Earth Clan dragon) they are given the credit for the beginning of the eventual unity of the clans.

Through the years their story became more and more of a mythical legend than the truth of what actually happened. But in the end the moral of their tale remains true. Love will always win.
