The Calling

The ocean stood long and menacing before me. He had called me here. But why? The sun was beginning to set and the ocean was lit up with its light, making the water appear as liquid gold. Pink waves lapped at my feet as I watched the sun go down. I lost track of time as the stars began to pop out and the moon shone its face on the water.

The moonlight stretched far into the distant reaches of the sea. And far away I could just make out the silhouette of a man. It was him. I knew it was him. And he was calling for me to come to him. Across the water. Exactly how was I supposed to do that? I looked around but I couldn’t see a boat or a raft or anything that could carry me across the water.

I took a hesitant step backwards. I don’t understand. What did he expect of me?

Trust me. His voice echoed over the ways carried by a wind that made me shiver. Follow me.

He was calling. And I knew I needed to answer. He’s never let me down before. I took a deep- admittedly shaky- breath and stepped into the water. The first thing I felt was the cold seeping into my feet. A shiver went up my spine and I couldn’t stop shivering. I took a few more slow steps forward and the cold traveled up my leg.

I wanted to go back. I wanted to go back to the comfort and steadiness of the beach. The beach wasn’t unpredictable. A wave splashed against my upper legs and soaked the lower part of my shirt. The shaking increased and I stopped walking. What if I did go back? I didn’t even know what was waiting ahead of me, but at least I knew what was behind me.

Trust me. His voice called to me again. This time the shaking wasn’t from the cold. It’s scary now. But the plans I have for your future are better than what lays behind you. Trust me. I am with you.

I took another deep breath and continued forward. The cold water continued to creep up my legs until it was at my waist. The waves pushed and pulled me around trying to knock me off my feet. I fought to stay upright but I didn’t know how much longer I could hang on. Suddenly I slipped on the sand beneath me and I was pulled under water.

The waves tossed me around. I tried to keep my eyes above them so I would know which way was up. But my lungs were starting to burn and my vision darkened. In a last desperate attempt I opened my mouth and called his name. In an instant I felt a hand wrap around my upper arm and pull me out of the water.

I sucked in the fresh air and coughed up the water in my lungs. As the coughing subsided and my body relaxed I looked around. I was kneeling on top of the water, though I couldn’t feel anything solid underneath me. My savior, the one who calls me, the one who rescued me, was standing on the waves surrounded by mist a little way away from me.

When I started to walk towards him I realized the water was no longer cold. It was also no longer rising. In fact it seemed to be going down the longer I walked. As I grew closer to my destination I sped up. I could see him waiting for me with his arms open wide. I threw myself into his arms and rested in his embrace.

My faith was tested and made stronger. I shall never doubt again for I am his and he is mine.
