The Black Eagle

The ground shook as the Earth opened up. The tree I clung to was beginning to slip into the opening and I had to jump to another tree farther away. As the earth fell away into the growing hole in the ground, I began to climb higher into the tree. It was a very tall tree and I was unsure if I would make it to the top. Fortunately I made it to the topmost branch that could hold my weight. The ground was leagues below me and I had to grasp the the branch with both hands to keep from falling off as my head swam.

The ground continued to shake and the crack in the earth grew wider and I held on for dear life. The sight of the ground below me made my stomach churn so I turned my gaze towards the sky. I noticed a block dot in the distance slowly coming closer. Soon it was close enough for me to make out its shape. It was an eagle. An all black eagle that stood out against the cloudless blue sky. Suddenly it perched itself on my branch right in front me. I froze in fear. The bird was so huge it almost filled out the whole branch.

It turned its head and fixed its amber eyes on me. It seemed to be waiting expectantly for something. I suddenly knew what I had to do. Carefully, I stood up on the branch and began to walk towards the eagle. The branch shook beneath me and I struggled to stay steady. Finally I reached the bird and I placed my hands in his back. He waited patiently.

I slowly climbed onto his back and once I was settled, we took off. I clung tight as he soared into the air and we made our way away from the broken earth. I looked down at the ground and expected to feel fear, but instead I felt peace. We flew for a long time over beautiful landscape and when we finally landed outside a town, I didn’t want to get off.
