The Girl In The Water

Water closed in over my head. I had about a minute before my lungs started to burn. Thankfully the current pulled me back up and I caught a breath before going under again. I treaded water frantically, trying to push myself back to the surface. I only succeeded in getting more disoriented as the water spun me in circles. My lungs began to burn.

Suddenly I was shoved into a metal pole. Before I could process, I had my arms wrapped around it and was pulling myself to the top. My head broke the surface and I gasped a breath and looked around. I was clinging to a light pole and my back was killing me. The longer I held on the more my arms ached. The water rushed past me and tried to pull me off again.

I heard a scream and looked around again. Farther down the street there was a very young girl clinging to another light pole. She looked like she was about to slip off. I was going to regret this. Before I could talk myself out of it I let go of my pole and let the water carry me down the street. I did everything I could to keep my head above water, but I faltered a little when something scraped against my leg.

I made it to the light post just in time to catch the girl as she finally slipped off. I pulled her to my chest as we both went under. I kept my arms tight around her as we were carried down the street and struggled to keep our heads above water.

I spotted another light post up ahead and tired to aim for it. When we neared I let go of the girl with one arm and wrapped it around the post. The girl wrapped her own arms around the post, but I still held on to her. I hear someone yelling behind us and I carefully turned my head.

To my relief, two men in a boat were making there was towards us.
